Hachimanyama Ropeway
Take the Hachimanyama Ropeway and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Omi region from above.
Hachimanyama Ropeway is a prime viewpoint offering sweeping vistas of Lake Biwa and the former castle town of Omihachiman. The ropeway provides a scenic aerial ride of about four minutes to the summit at 271.9 meters, making for a delightful journey above the landscape.
At the summit stands Murakumo Goshoryu-ji Monzeki, relocated here from Kyoto and enveloped in a solemn, historic atmosphere. Founded in 1596 by Hiden-in, the mother of Toyotomi Hidetsugu, the site also preserves stone walls from Hachimanyama Castle, built by Hidetsugu. An observation deck offers unbroken views of expansive Lake Biwa, the nostalgic streets of the old castle town, and the majestic panorama of the Hira mountain range.
In spring, cherry blossoms blanket the slopes; in autumn, the entire mountain glows with vivid fall colors-scenes of painterly beauty that feel almost otherworldly.
The surrounding area is rich with walkable attractions, including Hachiman-bori Canal, famous as a filming location for period dramas, the atmospheric streets once home to Omi merchants, and distinctive Vories architecture. Be sure to explore the town along with your ropeway visit.
