Located on the shores of Onuma in Wakkanai, the northernmost city in Japan, the Onuma Wild Bird Observatory is a prime spot for birdwatching. In autumn, swans stop here en route to their wintering grounds, and in spring, they rest before heading back to Siberia. The sight of thousands of swans covering the surface of the lake is truly breathtaking—with peak days seeing up to around 7,000 birds.

The observatory offers free binocular and telescope rentals, making it easy to enjoy birdwatching even if you arrive empty-handed. Besides swans, you can also spot other waterbirds such as grey herons, greater white-fronted geese, and bean geese. In winter, you may even have the chance to see the majestic Steller’s sea eagle and white-tailed eagle, both designated as natural monuments.

Inside the facility, you’ll find an observation room, a relaxation lounge, and an exhibition area where you can enjoy peaceful views of the surrounding nature. For those looking for more activities, Onuma also hosts canoeing experiences, tent sauna sessions, and snow events during winter—so be sure to check what’s available before visiting!
