Niigata Daijingu Shrine

Niigata Daijingu Shrine in Niigata City enshrines Amaterasu Omikami and Toyouke no Okami, the deities worshiped at Ise Jingu. Known as “Niigata’s Ise-sama,” it is beloved by local residents. Founded in 1876 as the Niigata headquarters of Jingu Kyoin, a missionary organization of Ise Jingu, it was later renamed to its current shrine name. The shrine also enshrines musubi deities, and many worshipers visit to pray for blessings in matchmaking and relationships.

Surrounded by trees, the shrine grounds are another of its charms, showing different seasonal scenery throughout the year. Cherry blossoms in spring, wisteria in early summer, and autumn leaves add color to the grounds, and the scenery in harmony with the shrine buildings, torii gate, and stone-step approach has also made it a popular photo spot.

The shrine offers a wide variety of amulets, including distinctive designs suited to modern life such as the “Wish-Granting Amulet,” “Happiness Toki Amulet,” and “Bicycle Safety Amulet.” There are two types of goshuin, one for Niigata Daijingu Shrine and one for the subsidiary Onbayashi Inari Shrine within the grounds. It is also known as the birthplace of Shinto wedding ceremonies in Niigata, and traditional wedding rites are still held here today. Annual events are also diverse, including the Nagoshi no Oharae purification ritual in late June, when visitors pray for good health by passing through a large ring of sacred grass.
