Shirahige Falls

One of the iconic attractions of the Biei Shirogane Onsen area, Shirahige Falls lives up to its name as white streams cascade down a rugged cliff like a "white beard”, dropping approximately 30 meters into the Biei River. This waterfall is classified as a rare "subterranean stream waterfall" (senryu-baku), where water flows directly from cracks in the rock face.

It was kind of chilly on site, and if you stand around too long you’ll want to head back to the car.
We didn’t stay long, but it definitely left a strong impression.

Café Aoyama Paperback is a book café that opened in 2016. Inside this bustling spot you’ll find retro-chic tables and chairs, and an overall old-school look and vibe await. Come here for a cup of hand-drip coffee made carefully under the warm, cozy lights inside.

This café has such a great vibe, with a hint of that bookish atmosphere. The wooden decor feels really classy and relaxing. Both the coffee and desserts are good, but the soufflé pancakes are especially popular—super fluffy and go perfectly with coffee. It’s a nice spot to read alone, work on your laptop, or just chat with friends. You can easily spend hours here and feel comfortable.

At the intersection of the Koshu Kaido (now known as the Kyu Kaisho Kaido) and Kamakura Kaido roads sits a "kosatsu" post board. These post boards, as big as 4.6m wide and 5m tall, served like a modern day "bulletin board", where new decrees and public announcements were shared.

The Tokyo Monorail that runs between Haneda Airport and Tokyo, with an average interval of only 4 minutes, can take you to Hamamatsucho Station in as little as 13 minutes, where a transfer to the JR Yamanote Line can be made.

My husband did the firefighter activity, which really helped our child understand how tough and dangerous his job is. It's a meaningful and educational experience.

Udo Shrine

This unique shrine sits inside a cave found along the cliffs facing the sea. The shrine is known for safe childbirth, children, marriage as well as property for fishermen and those headed out to sea. Udo Shrine and its surrounding area are designated as a National Scenic Beauty.

You have to walk a bit to get to the shrine, but the coastal scenery is stunning and the shrine inside the natural cave is really unique.
You can also buy five lucky stones and try to toss them through a rope ring to make a wish—left hand for men, right hand for women. It's actually not that easy to get them in!

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge is a narrow v-shaped chasm made over thousands of years by the Gokase River’s erosion of Mt. Aso’s volcanic rock. This spectacular place is surrounded by cliffs that average 80 meters in height (reaching up to 100 meters) and extend along for 7 kilometers. Takachiho Gorge has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

Such a wonderful and relaxing place. No wonder it's called the home of the gods. I was lucky there weren't many people boating, so it felt super peaceful.
