Breakfast at Nikko Kanaya Hotel
“Nikko Kanaya Hotel” first opened in 1873, and as Japan’s oldest resort classic hotel, it’s been designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property and Modernized Industrial Heritage.
I had breakfast in the main dining room, one of the highlights of the hotel.
Breakfast hours: 7:30am-9:30am
I was seated at a table by the windows.
Most hotel breakfasts are served buffet-style lately, but here they serve off of a classic menu, where you can choose an egg dish and drink.
Taking Photos of Various Places Around “Nikko Kanaya Hotel”
After breakfast, I puttered around the hotel.
I loved the retro styling.
The view out the window was beautiful.
Actually, I have several relatives in Nikko, so I ran into some of them who work at this hotel.
I made my reservation without reaching out to them, but apparently they noticed me on the guest list.
They showed me around the hotel, so I’ll introduce these other locations they showed me.
“DACITE” is the hotel’s bar. Since it is a bar, it typically is only open at night, but they let me see inside.
They have over 200 types of single-malt whiskey in stock.
They also had LP records.
I’ve already shown a picture of the dining room, but it’s surrounded by pieces of art too.
There’s a small eatery located next to the main dining room. When the building first opened this was the main dining room, but now it’s used mainly for banquets, conferences, parties, and the like.
The latticed ceiling was beautiful.
I also got to see other types of guest rooms.
There was also a skating rink. Apparently during the summer it’s used as a heated pool.
Exhibition Room “Time in Kanaya”
This exhibit features items and materials related to things and people from Kanaya Hotel’s history, spanning over 140 years.
Next was outside. The building in the front is the main building I’d seen so far, while the building in the back is a new building.
This building is the annex. It’s apparently the sister building to Fujiya Hotel’s “Hana Goten” in Hakone Miyanoshita.
The architects behind the buildings are siblings, so the designs are similar.
I typically choose my accommodations when travelling based on convenient access to sightseeing locations and the value of the facilities offered – the hotel itself doesn’t tend to matter much to me.
However, this time I stayed at Nikko Kanaya Hotel to experience the atmosphere of a “classic hotel,” and it was a nice change of pace.
