What is Tanukikoji Shopping Street Like?

Located in central Sapporo, Hokkaido, Tanukikoji Shopping Street is the oldest shopping street in Hokkaido, with a history of more than 145 years.
About 200 shops line the street along an east-west stretch of Approx. 900 meters from Tanukikoji 1-chome to 7-chome.
Along with shops in many genres, from long-established Japanese sweets stores with over 60 years of history to vintage clothing stores and major chain shops, it also has large-scale shops and facilities such as the popular discount store Don Quijote and the mixed-use complex moyuk SAPPORO, a landmark of Tanukikoji Shopping Street.
There are also many drugstores in 3-chome and 5-chome, making these areas popular with international visitors who enjoy browsing drugstores.
You can also enjoy great Sapporo food here, not just shopping, thanks to famous restaurants serving local specialties such as authentic Sapporo beer and jingisukan.
Another highlight is Honjin Tanuki Daimyojin Shrine, built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tanukikoji Shopping Street.
At Honjin Tanuki Daimyojin Shrine in Tanukikoji 5-chome, it is said that stroking the tanuki Jizo brings eight blessings, so be sure to stop by while taking a break from shopping.
Another feature is that the entire stretch from 1-chome to 7-chome is covered by a long roofed arcade, so you can enjoy shopping without an umbrella even in bad weather.
At the corner of Tanukikoji 3-chome, there is the Tanukikoji Toshin Minkan Koban, where private volunteers provide tourist information and introduce the appeal and highlights of Tanukikoji Shopping Street.
Some staff can assist in languages other than Japanese, which makes it even easier for international visitors to stop by with peace of mind.

The History of Tanukikoji Shopping Street

Its history began in 1869, when restaurants and merchant shops started to appear around what is now Tanukikoji 2-chome to 3-chome, and by around 1871 the area came to be called “Tanukikoji.”
In 1927, lily-of-the-valley streetlights were installed in Tanukikoji 5-chome, and this led to the same lights being installed in each block, becoming a symbol of Tanukikoji.
Although they were confiscated by the government during World War II, the lights were reinstalled after the war. Even today, they continue to light up Tanukikoji Shopping Street.
In 1960, covered arcades, another symbol of Tanukikoji Shopping Street, were installed in each block after the streetlights.
In 1982, the second-generation arcade was installed from Tanukikoji 1-chome to 6-chome, and it still shelters visitors overhead today.
