When Can You See the Hachimantai Dragon Eye?

The Hachimantai Dragon Eye can only usually be seen from late May to early June.
Depending on conditions such as snowfall, snowmelt, and weather, there are some years when it cannot be seen.
Because Kagami-numa is located at an elevation of Approx. 1,500 m, it is cold even from late May to early June, with temperatures around 50°F, and there can be a temperature difference of Approx. 15 degrees compared with the plains.
So even though it may be warm enough for short sleeves in lower areas, it is recommended to bring a warm outer layer so you do not get cold.
Snow still remains around Kagami-numa, so waterproof shoes such as rain boots are also useful.

Access to Kagami-numa

Here is how to get there from Akita Airport, a starting point for sightseeing in Akita.
If you are accessing Kagami-numa from Akita Airport, the travel time is as follows.
However, from Morioka Station in Iwate, it takes Approx. 2 hours by bus. From JR Kazuno-Hanawa Station in Akita, you can get there in Approx. 1 hour 30 minutes by taking a reservation-only sightseeing bus.
Try to include Kagami-numa in your travel plans so you can keep travel time to a minimum.

1. At Akita Airport, take the Akita Airport Limousine Bus bound for Kencho Shiyakusho-mae
2. Get off at Akita Station West Exit, then board the JR Ou Main Line Komachi No. 26 bound for Tokyo at Akita Station
3. Get off at JR Tazawako Station, then board the bus at the Tazawako Ekimae bus stop
4. Get off at the last stop, Hachimantai Summit, and arrive after a 10-minute walk

Hachimantai Summit Rest House is about a 10-minute walk from Kagami-numa.
Inside, you’ll find a light meal corner, souvenir shop, rest area, and restrooms, making it a recommended place to take a break before or after sightseeing.
