The main shrine building and gates were all finished in 1706 and remain intact to this day, and they have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Also popular are the beautiful scarlet torii corridor (“senbon torii”) and the “praying nutmeg tree” that’s said to grant people’s wishes.

From mid-April, around 3,000 azaleas across 100 varieties bloom beautifully in the azalea garden. The “Bunkyo Azalea Festival” is held when the flowers are at their peak, and that is the only time when the azalea garden is open to the public.
The Nezu Shrine Festival is held in mid-September, and it’s another popular time for visitors.

The whole shrine is covered in azaleas, creating a breathtaking sea of flowers. These colorful blooms look especially brilliant in the sunlight, making it easy to get lost in the feeling of spring.

The bright red 'Senbon Torii' gates and all the azaleas everywhere are just fantastic!

  • If you don't like crowded places, this shrine is a great spot to visit. It's beautiful and very peaceful. I really enjoyed that. I'll definitely be coming back here often.
