Across Naoshima you’ll find art installations that blur the line between art and nature. The island is also home to Chichu Art Museum, a gallery designed by world renowned architect Tadao Ando. The majority of the museum is intentionally built below the earth’s surface to avoid taking away from the beautiful landscape of the Seto Inland Sea. Although while subterrain, its design still allows for natural light to pour in, providing a museum space that changes along with the light or season that day.

Inside 5 pieces from Water Lilies, a piece by Claude Monet, Father of Impressionism, are on display in addition to other noteworthy pieces like installations by Walter De Maria that can only be enjoyed via natural light, or the three installations by James Turrell that celebrate light itself.

After enjoying the museum, guests can enjoy a time away and view across the Seto Inland Sea at the café, or visit the museum shop for original items, books and goods highlighting the artists and museum architecture.
There is also a garden full of over 200 different plants and trees, celebrating the plants loved by Claude Monet.

  • It really feels like stepping into an underground world. You have to walk through a grassy slope first, and the atmosphere is super mysterious.

  • The building itself is a work of art. There are lots of international visitors here. Just a heads up, you need to make a reservation to enter.

  • Tadao Ando's concrete architecture is a massive work of art in itself. The way he uses light, shadow, and geometric shapes is truly masterful.

  • The building itself is a work of art. The design is simple, but it's truly amazing. You need to book online in advance, and photography is prohibited in many areas.
