Musashi kokufu Ato
A once former hub and politcal center of the region.
"Kokufu" are the capitals of the over 60 different capital cities set up from the early Nara to mid-Heian Periods (approx 8th to 10th century) to centralize political administration.
Fuchu City is the location of the Kokufu capital of the old Musashi Province, the land that sits on present-day Tokyo, Saitama, and parts of Kanagawa Prefecture. It served as a key center for land and water transport, as well as a central hub for politics, economy and culture.
At the center of the Kokufu sat an area called the "Kokuga", the center area that housed most administrative buildings and the national government office.
After a painstaking, 30-year excavation, it was found that the grounds of Okunitama-jinja Shrine and the area just east of it were home to the old Kokuga District. The archeological dig also unearthed the discovery of a large building believed to be the head ministry office.
Next to the signboard stand a number of different vermillion pillars, which are used as markers to show the original location of the building pillars located during the excavation.
