This park was opened in 1909 as Nagoya City’s first park, which celebrated its 110th anniversary in 2019. There are many historical monuments and landmarks throughout the park, such as the fountain tower with Roman-style marble columns and rockwork, and the Italian Renaissance-style concert hall, Sogakudo. The municipal zoo used to be located here until it was relocated to Higashiyama in 1937.
It has been selected as one of the “100 best places for cherry blossoms”, and it attracts a large crowd in spring. It is also beautifully illuminated at night. The reflection of Ukimido and cherry blossoms on the surface of Ryugaike Pond is a must-see.
It’s not only cherry blossoms but also seasonal flowers that bloom throughout the year, creating a beautiful Japanese scene. The sight of about 20,000 Japanese irises in full bloom in May and June, as well as the autumn foliage, are must-sees.
There is a tree sample garden around the Nagoya City Greenification Center in Tsuruma Park, and a greenhouse is inside the garden. The “Suifuyo (Hibiscus Mutabilis)”, a mysterious plant whose flowers change color from white in the morning to pink in the afternoon, and crimson in the evening, is well-known at the Greenification Center and is at its best from early August to early October.
