Otani-yaki Pottery Fair
Otani Pottery can be purchased at reduced prices in this popular event.
In 2003, Otani-yaki pottery in Naruto City was designated as a national traditional craft. It is said that a potter from Oita Prefecture visited Otani Village around 1780, and started pottery using red clay from Kanigaya.
On the 2nd Saturday and Sunday of November every year, Otani-yaki Tsubo Matsuri (pottery fair) is held. In this fair of more than 200-year history, there are exhibitions and display sales where Otani Pottery’s dishes, bowls and other products are available at reduced prices.
To this day, Otani District has an area called Otani-yaki no Sato with several potteries still working. Some of them let you create your own. Try visiting the potteries.
