Sendai Domain’s lord, Date Masamune’s mausoleum. According to the will of Date Masamune who passed away in 1636, the 2nd lord, Tadamune built it in the following year. Around Zuihoden, there are information halls and mausoleums such as Kansenden for Date Tadamune and Zennoden for Date Tsunamune. The whole area is Kyogamine Date Clan Tomb, designated as Sendai City’s Historic Site.
Although Zuihoden was designated as a national treasure in 1931, the Great Sendai Air Raid in 1945 burned it down. The current hall was rebuilt according to the original architecture in 1979. The colorful decoration that reminds of the former hall is as bright as the fall foliage on its grounds. The support parts for the eaves are built especially sturdy. Before the rebuilding, archaeological study was conducted and Masamune’s bones and burial goods were found. Some of them are displayed in Zuihoden’s information hall.
