Tamaki Shrine
The inner shrine of the “Three Kumano Mountains”.
A sacred place sitting upon the summit of Mt. Tamaki, with an altitude of 1076m. The Jinmu Emperor came here to pray for the victory of a war, while resting his troops. As the inner shrine of the “Kumano Sanzan (Three Main Kumano Shrines, Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, Kumano Nachi Taisha)'', it has gained acclaim for its powers. It is affiliated with another world heritage, the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”, and the ruin, “Omine Okugakemichi ''.
It is possible to arrive by car, but the surrounding mountain roads are narrow, so beware. Snow is expected during the Winter, as well as fog, owing to its mysterious aesthetic.
This imposing shrine is made with Zelkova. The office built in 1804 combines the techniques of a library and worshiping grounds, and is designated as an important cultural heritage. Make sure to check out Yasuharu Tachibana (painter in the Edo period)’s great artworks.
If you climb even further up the mountains near the summit, visitors can check out a gem worshiped by Emperor Jinmu. This petit shrine is the so-called prototype of the inner shrine, and it is a custom to visit this shrine first.
