Oshinkoshin Falls, also known as "Soubi Falls" because the stream splits into two halfway down, has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.

The name "Oshinkoshin Falls" comes from the Ainu word "o-shunku-usi," which means "a place where Ezo spruce grows downstream" in Ainu language.

Visitors can go up the stairs to the middle height of the waterfall and see the powerful flow of the waterfall in front of them. In addition, the Oshinkoshin Observatory is set up a little away from the waterfall, overlooking the sea of Okhotsk and the mountains of Shiretoko. During the drift ice season from February to March, you can see the sea covered with drift ice to the horizon.

Highlights

  • With a drop of about 30 meters, it is the largest waterfall in Shiretoko.
  • It has been selected as one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.
  • If you visit in winter, you can enjoy the sight of the waterfalls freezing over, leaving the water flowing.
  • During the drift ice season, you can see drift ice on the Sea of Okhotsk from the observation platform above the waterfall.

Oshinkoshin Waterfall is about 30 meters tall, and the water drops straight down from above—it's really impressive. When you climb up to the Oshinkoshin observation deck, you get an amazing view of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Shiretoko mountains. I couldn't help but be in awe of how nature created such a beautiful place. It's definitely worth a visit for these stunning views.
