Senjuan Yoshimune Nara Main Store
Traditional Nara-style warabi mochi made only with rare natural ingredients.
Rooted in a confectionery founded in 1936, Senjuan Yoshimune, a master of traditional sweets in Nara, has built a long history in the region. Its flagship store, located near the Kaidan-in Hall of Todaiji Temple, is housed in a historic building over 100 years old, featuring a charming exterior with lattice doors and namako-kabe plaster walls.
Its signature product is the traditional Nara-style fresh warabi mochi, created by the previous head of the shop after much trial and error while studying ancient documents. Made by blending domestically produced hon-warabi (true bracken) starch and sweet potato starch in a perfectly balanced ratio, it is crafted to achieve a soft texture and smooth feel when eaten.
Another specialty is the pure hon-nama warabi mochi, made from 100% domestically produced hon-warabi starch without any sweet potato starch. Due to the rarity of the ingredients, it was once sold only seven days a year—during Obon and New Year—but in response to popular demand, it became available year-round starting in October 2019, quickly becoming a hit.
This famous treat can also be enjoyed in the store’s adjoining tea room, where customers can savor the luxury of freshly made, authentic warabi mochi crafted from genuine ingredients.
