Gyokusentei main store
If you want to taste Yokohama's specialty "Sanma-men," this is the place to go.
A Chinese restaurant located just off the main street of Isezakicho Shopping Mall, once the bustling center of Yokohama. Established in Taisho 7 (1918), it's famous nationwide for its "Sanma-men," a Yokohama specialty. The interior evokes a nostalgic, Showa-era ambiance, attracting both locals and visitors from afar. The walls are adorned with autographs from celebrities.
"Sanma-men" is seasoned to suit Japanese tastes, featuring stir-fried bean sprouts, cabbage, wood ear mushrooms, carrots, onions, spinach, and pork in a thick sauce. The current most popular dish is the "Sanma Wonton Men," devised by the second-generation owner. Other favorites include Ban-men, Leek and Liver, homemade Shumai, fried wonton, and Scallion Noodles.
Originally, the restaurant operated under the name "Sangoku Ryori," suggesting a blend of Western, Chinese, and Japanese cuisines. There used to be a doorman at the entrance back in the day. Although now located near the station and focusing mainly on noodles, the menu still includes dishes like curry rice and oyakodon, reminiscent of its early days. This "Machichuka" (town Chinese restaurant), a piece of Yokohama's history, is just a 10-minute walk from JR Kannai Station. There's also a branch at Yokohama Station East Exit's Porta, popular since the underground mall's opening.
