Approximately 1,200 cherry blossom trees have been planted along the 8km long embankment of the Shiroishi River in southern Miyagi Prefecture, all blooming simultaneously in spring. The vibrant blue of the clear river, the delicate pale pink of the cherry blossoms, and the white of the remaining snow on the Zao mountain range create a picturesque scene, earning it a place among the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites" and the nickname "Hitome Senbon Zakura."

During the bloom, the "Oogawara Sakura Festival" is held, and the trees are illuminated at night. There are numerous photo spots along the river, such as the "Suehiro Pedestrian Bridge" with cherry trees lining both sides of the river, the "Niragami Dam" where the composition of the Zao mountain range and cherry blossoms is beautiful, and the "Shibata Senzakura Bridge" where you can capture a shot of the cherry blossoms and a train.

In addition, you can enjoy a display of tulips and azaleas alongside the cherry blossoms at "Shiroishi River Senzakura Park" or look down on the cherry blossoms at "Funaoka Castle Ruins Park," where 1,300 cherry trees have been planted. Moreover, among the cherry blossoms along the river is the "largest Somei Yoshino cherry tree in Japan" with a trunk circumference of 4.35m and a height of 16m, which is also a must-see.
