Last update :

This ancient shrine is said to have been founded in the 2nd year of the Jogan era (860) when the renowned Buddhist priest Ennin received a divine revelation from the incarnation of Susano-no-Mikoto. The shrine venerates three deities: "Susano-no-Mikoto", known for blessings in bountiful harvests, matchmaking, and warding off evil; "Ame-no-hohi-no-Mikoto", considered the god of the sun and rice ears; and "Sadatoki Shinno-no-Mikoto", governing agriculture and academic improvement. Thus, the shrine is widely respected as a place where a variety of wishes are accepted.

The shrine precincts contain many attractions, such as a splendid shrine building in the Sogi-cypress construction style with intricate designs and a rare three-wheeled torii gate (Miwa Torii). The "stroking cow", which is said to alleviate illnesses and pains when the same part of your body as the afflicted area is stroked, is a must-see. Next to the shrine building, a "guardian cow", not a typical komainu (guardian dog), is placed, guarding the deities with a sharp gaze.

Every five years, a grand festival is held, featuring the "Shinko Festival" in which a parade, centered around a phoenix palanquin (cow cart) pulled by a black cow, tours around the parishioners' fifty town districts to pray for peace and tranquility. This ancient festival creates a bustling atmosphere in the neighborhood.
