Kimuraya Honten

The doll-shaped cakes from the oldest shop on Nakamise Street, with shapes inspired by Asakusa, are perfect for souvenirs.

Last update :

Kimuraya Honten is one of the oldest shops in Asakusa, boasting the longest history among the numerous doll-shaped cake shops in the area, having been founded in the 4th year of the Keio era (1868). Located at the very end of Nakamise Street, just before the treasure house gate of Sensoji Temple, the shop is always bustling with many tourists.

The shop's signature doll-shaped cakes are made from a dough of wheat flour and eggs and filled with bean paste, continuing the recipe invented by the first-generation owner. The cakes are characterized by their modest sweetness and simple taste, which make you feel like you could eat several. They are also made in four shapes related to Asakusa - a five-storied pagoda, a deity of thunder, a lantern, and a dove - which have not changed since the shop's establishment.

The doll-shaped cakes, each carefully baked by craftsmen at the storefront, can be kept at room temperature for one week and come in a variety of boxed versions, making them perfect for souvenirs. For those who do not like sweet bean paste or sweet foods, the shop also recommends doll-shaped cakes without bean paste. In addition, homemade tile-shaped rice crackers are popular at the storefront (including egg crackers, peanut crackers, bean crackers, cashew nut crackers, ginger crackers, and perilla crackers).
