This annual lighting event takes place along the Meguro River in early November. Known as a cherry blossom hotspot, the Meguro River and the Gotanda Fureai Mizube Square are decorated with approximately 350,000 cherry blossom-colored LED lights to allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms even in winter. The riverside sparkles in lovely cherry blossom hues, creating a romantic landscape as the delicate lights reflect on the water's surface. This event is affectionately known as "Winter Sakura®."
The illumination is powered by biodiesel fuel, upcycled from used cooking oil collected from restaurants and households in the surrounding area of the event. The power for the illumination is generated on-site, making this event environmentally friendly. It achieves a cycle of "collection, regeneration, and utilization" of waste cooking oil, realizing 100% local production and consumption of energy.
Inside the Gotanda Fureai Mizube Square, which serves as the event venue, there is a "Winter Sakura® Flower Viewing Spot." The illuminated riverside takes about 10 minutes to stroll along leisurely. Be sure to dress warmly before heading out.
