The Tokaido was one of the main highways maintained during the Edo Period (1603-1868).
From Tokyo to Kyoto, this highway had 53 posts. Originating from Nihonbashi, the second post was Shinagawa Juku. Along a 2-km stretch of road, Shinagawa Juku bustled as a post town.
Even now, a lot of shops line the streets, and traces of the former post town remain. There are many temples, shrines, and landmarks where its history can be experienced.
