Kawagoe Kumano Shrine

This shrine, affectionately known as "Okumansama" by locals, was established in 1590 from the division of the Kishu Kumano Hongu Taisha during the Muromachi period. It is known for its blessings of good fortune, with numerous lucky spots within its precincts, including the "Fortune-Trying Ring Toss" and the "Treasure Pond," where visitors wash money for increased wealth.

The Yatagarasu, a mythical three-legged crow and an emblem of the Kumano deity, is said to guide those lost in darkness towards hope. Popular attractions include the "Musubi no Niwa" garden, where visitors can receive power from reliefs prayed over at Kumano Hongu Taisha, and the endearing statue of the "Jumbo Yatagarasu," along with popular charms and fortune slips. The shrine's principal deities, Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto from the "Kojiki," make it a popular spot for those seeking relationship blessings.

Unique to the shrine is the "Health Road" on the approach path. Lined with gravel, walking barefoot on it is said to stimulate foot pressure points, promoting health and fatigue recovery.

The annual "Kawagoe Tori-no-Ichi" festival is held on December 3rd at the Oowashi Shrine, a part of the complex. This century-old event draws tens of thousands of visitors seeking lucky bamboo rakes and features Kagura performances in the Kagura Hall.
