Yufudake
The Majestic Symbol of Yufuin.
Located northeast of one of Japan's premier hot spring resorts, Yufuin Onsen, Yufudake stands at an elevation of 1,583 meters. This twin-peaked active volcano is known for its sheer majestic grandeur and often referred to as the "Mt. Fuji of Bungo”. Legeng here traces back to ancient times when the peak was revered as sacred mountain, appearing in texts as early as the "Bungo Fudoki" and Japan's oldest poetry collection, the "Manyoshu”.
Look to this grand slope to find stunning seasonal landscapes, especially in the spring to summer months as the vibrant contrast of young green grass glimmers against the deep blue sky. In early summer, the mountain is enrobed with blooming Miyamakirishima flowers, while autumn brings fields of pampas grass and colorful foliage. Winter occasionally offers views of frost-covered trees and ice formations. An annual grass-burning event in March leaves the area uniquely blackened, adding to its one-of-a-kind look.
Hikers love this spot for its panoramic views from the summit, looking out over the Kuju Mountain Range, the townscape of Yufuin and Beppu Bay. The mountain features multiple hiking trails, ranging from two-hour round trips to six and a half hours, catering to various fitness levels and schedules.
