Hijiyama Park
A hilltop park where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms in spring and a view of Hiroshima cityscape.
Established in 1903, this was the first park to be opened in Hiroshima city. Despite being only about 2km across the river from the city center, it's nestled in a lush environment and cherished as a place of relaxation for the locals. From atop the small hill where the park is located, you can enjoy a sweeping view of the cityscape below and the Seto Inland Sea.
It's also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot alongside Peace Memorial Park, with about 1,300 cherry trees, mainly Somei Yoshino, blooming from late March to early April. Note that the park is closed from 11 PM to 5 AM. The path from the foot of the hill to the park has a significant elevation change, so it's recommended to use the approximately 200-meter-long moving walkway and escalator, "Hijiyama Skywalk," which connects to a large commercial facility.
The park houses the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, with its storehouse-inspired appearance, and the Hiroshima City Manga Library, which holds over 160,000 volumes, along with sculptures by contemporary artists scattered around, making it popular as a park where you can experience art up close.
