Musashi Imperial Graveyard
Premier Tokyo power spot enrobed in serenity and immense mystique.
The esteemed site of four Japanese Imperial Family tombs, Emperor Taisho and Empress Teimei, Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun, rest at this imperial cemetery set in a pocket of rich nature in the Hachioji city area of Tokyo.
Emperor Taisho, the 123rd emperor, rests in the Tama Mausoleum, an ancient-style tomb designed with three upper and three lower levels. Bonsai and plants, which Emperor Taisho cherished during his lifetime, surround the tomb. The Musashino Mausoleum to the east of the Tama Mausoleum is the tomb of Emperor Showa, who reigned for over 60 years, spanning from before World War II to Japan's post-war recovery. This tomb stands 8.75 meters tall and features a gentler upper dome compared to the Tama Mausoleum, giving it a more approachable atmosphere.
The entire site can be reached by the hallowed 400-meter path that leads from the main gate to the mausoleums, flanked with Kitayama cedar trees imported from Kyoto. The grounds are equally immense and serene, making it one of Tokyo's premier power spots. At the Tama Mausoleum District Office, visitors can obtain a "Goryoin" seal, similar to shrine stamps.
