Shiogama Minato Festival
One of Japan's three major boat festivals, showcasing a magnificent gathering of grand vessels.
This maritime festival takes place in the port city of Shiogama in Miyagi Prefecture, facing Shiogama Bay. As one of the largest sea festivals in the country, it is recognized alongside the Kangensai Festival at Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima and the Kifune Festival at Kifune Shrine in Kanagawa as one of the "Three Major Boat Festivals of Japan."
Held on "Marine Day," the third Monday of July, the main festival features two portable shrines from the Shiogama Shrine and Shiwahiko Shrine, which boast some of the highest numbers of worshippers in the Tohoku region. These shrines are placed on the festival's exclusive boats, the "Ryuho-maru" and the "Hou-ou-maru." Leading a fleet of about 80 accompanying boats, the "Ryuho-maru" and "Hou-ou-maru" sail through Matsushima Bay for five hours. The majestic sight of this grand procession of boats is truly breathtaking.
While the festival boats are out at sea, a vibrant land parade takes place in the city center, further enhancing the festive atmosphere. The night before the main event, about 8,000 fireworks are launched over the sea, illuminating the water with a dazzling array of colors.
