A beloved summer tradition that vividly lights up the night sky over Sendai, the City of Trees, this event has been carried on as the eve festival of the Sendai Tanabata Festival, a traditional celebration dating back to the Edo period, with the aim of fostering local pride.

The first event was held in 1970. Since then, attendance has continued to grow, and today Approx. 450,000 people come each year, making it one of Japan’s largest fireworks festivals held in a city center.

As excitement builds among the crowds gathering along the Hirose River, the fireworks launched into the sky stir the heart with sound and light, creating a dreamlike moment as if wishes were being released into the heavens. The powerful starmines, large shell fireworks, and Approx. 16,000 fireworks launched one after another create a breathtaking spectacle that, together with the thunderous blasts echoing through the body, is sure to leave a lasting impression.

In recent years, paid seating has also been available and is popular for offering a more comfortable and easier-to-view setting to enjoy the fireworks. Information on ticket sales for the seating is announced on the official website from time to time, so those hoping to buy tickets should check it regularly.
