Started in 1952, the Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Festival is the largest annual event in Kanazawa, commemorating Lord Maeda Toshiie's historic entry into Kanazawa Castle on June 14, 1583, marking the foundation of the city.

The three-day festival begins with the symbolic Omizutori water ceremony at Kanazawa Shrine, located next to the famous Kenrokuen Garden. Various cultural activities follow, including the elegant Hyakumangoku Tea Ceremony, featuring tea-serving performances by different traditional schools; the Children's Lantern and Drum Parade, in which local children march through the streets rhythmically beating drums; and a spectacular folk music performance, the Minyo Hana-emaki, hosted at Kanazawa Theater.

The festival's highlight is the vibrant Hyakumangoku Parade, attracting numerous visitors from across Japan. It begins with lively marching bands and firefighters performing the traditional Kaga ladder climbing act (Kaga-tobi Hashigo-nobori). The parade culminates with actors portraying Lord Maeda Toshiie and his wife Omatsu, dressed in ornate historical attire.

Don't miss seeing famous actors from popular films and TV dramas portraying these iconic historical figures!
