This town is famous as a production area for Bizen ware, counted among Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns. Around JR Ibe Station, traditional kilns, workshops, and galleries lined with pottery pieces are clustered together, making it fun to stroll around the town.

The streets, lined with climbing kiln buildings with red brick chimneys and houses made with Bizen ware roof tiles and walls, create a distinctive old-fashioned townscape full of classic charm. Bizen ware is also used in signs and guideposts, and ceramic designs are incorporated into the paving and decorations throughout the town, so you can feel the character of a pottery village all around.

Near JR Ibe Station are the Bizen Pottery Traditional and Contemporary Art Museum and the Bizen City Museum of Art, newly opened in July 2025, where you can explore the history of Bizen ware as well as art beyond Bizen pottery.

The Bizen Pottery Festival is held every fall. The area around the station becomes a pedestrian-only zone, with pottery sales by kilns and galleries, potter’s wheel demonstrations, and hands-on pottery experiences, drawing many visitors, including pottery lovers.

It has a real rural Japan feel. The streets are quiet, and the pottery atmosphere is really strong. There are Bizen ware shops all along the way, and it’s fun to watch people making pottery and browse the pieces. Great for people who like to take it slow and enjoy handmade crafts and traditional culture.

Overall, it was a pretty nice place. The environment is comfortable, the pace feels relaxed, and it’s nice to wander around without feeling rushed. It’s not the kind of spot that makes you go wow right away, but the more closely you look, the more charm it has.
It doesn’t get overwhelmingly crowded, so it’s just right for photos and a walk. A great place to fit into the middle of an itinerary as a relaxing break.
