When visiting Osaka’s Shinsekai area, one of the most iconic shopping routes is Shinsekai Hon-dori Shopping Street. The street is full of Osaka’s old-fashioned working-class charm and offers a real sense of everyday local life. You’ll find all kinds of kushikatsu restaurants, izakayas, souvenir shops, and food stalls, along with distinctive signs and neon lights. As you stroll around, you can also enjoy the lively atmosphere with a touch of nostalgia. Tsutenkaku Tower is nearby, so it’s very convenient to visit both together.

Shinsekai Hon-dori Shopping Street in Osaka has a lively atmosphere full of local Osaka character! Along the way, there are lots of kushikatsu restaurants, izakayas, and all kinds of snack shops. The streets are bustling with people, giving the area a real local feel.
What attracted me most was Osaka’s famous kushikatsu. The freshly fried skewers had a golden, crispy coating that made a “crunch” when I bit into them, while the ingredients inside remained fresh and tender. They were fragrant, crispy, and really delicious!

When I arrived at Osaka’s Shinsekai Hon-dori Shopping Street, I was immediately blown away by the over-the-top 3D signs! Giant pufferfish, octopus, and kushikatsu signs—every shop looks like it’s competing to be the most eye-catching. Every quick photo feels so Osaka.
Even on a weekday, it was packed with tourists from all over the world and incredibly lively! The area is full of all kinds of restaurants and street food. The smell of kushikatsu, takoyaki, and grilled meat drifts through the street, making it hard to stop eating as you walk.
If you want to experience authentic, down-to-earth Osaka culture, Shinsekai is definitely a must-visit! -

This area has seen better days, but prices are pretty cheap now. There are still some good restaurants around.
