Nanzenji Temple was built by Retired Emperor Kameyama and is one of Kyoto’s most iconic Zen temples. From the path beside the Keage Incline, you can walk gradually uphill to reach Nanzenji Temple. The entire temple has a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, with different scenery in every season. It’s a great place to slow down and fully experience Kyoto’s Zen spirit.

However, after visiting, I felt that Nanzenji Temple was somewhat similar to Tofukuji Temple—the grounds are very large and divided into many different buildings and attractions, and most areas require a separate admission fee. Each one costs around JPY 500–600, which really isn’t very visitor-friendly. Fortunately, the areas of Nanzenji Temple that are free to visit are actually very extensive. Even if you don’t pay to enter the buildings, simply strolling around outside and taking photos is already well worth it.

The red-brick arches of the Suirokaku Aqueduct have a strong ancient Roman European style, creating an interesting contrast with the surrounding Japanese temple buildings. It’s also one of Kyoto’s most iconic historic sites. With its red-brick arches, weathered walls, and natural scenery that changes with the seasons, it looks atmospheric from every angle.

Nanzenji Temple is a very famous Zen temple in Kyoto. As soon as you enter the grounds, you can feel a solemn and peaceful atmosphere. The temple is surrounded by greenery, and the old buildings blend with the natural scenery, making you slow down without even realizing it.

During this visit to Nanzenji Temple, what impressed me most were the majestic Sanmon Gate and the historic red-brick Suirokaku Aqueduct. Standing beneath the aqueduct and admiring its arched brick structure, the blend of classical and retro atmosphere felt very special. It's also a great place to take photos as keepsakes.

Nanzenji Temple feels rustic and solemn, with lush greenery throughout the grounds and a peaceful Zen atmosphere. The famous aqueduct blends history with architectural beauty, and the scenery is captivating in every season. It’s a Kyoto spot worth taking your time to appreciate.

I love the garden landscapes at Kyoto's temples. The little bridges and flowing streams make this a place I never get tired of visiting—especially during cherry blossom season! 😍

The garden is absolutely beautiful, and the Suirokaku aqueduct inside, built during the Meiji era, is a pretty impressive Western-style structure.

The Japanese-style garden is exquisite, and the Suirokaku Aqueduct from Lake Biwa makes a great photo backdrop. You can also try Kyoto's famous Junsei yudofu at the entrance.

There's a famous restaurant called Junsei nearby that serves yudofu. Great spot to try authentic Kyoto cuisine.
