Although I didn’t get the chance to stay overnight at Ginzan Onsen this time, seeing Notoya Ryokan in person, which looks like the inspiration for the iconic bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, was still incredibly exciting.

This century-old, Western-style wooden building is a representative work of the Taisho Romantic era. From the other side of the small red bridge, its rows of classical window frames and intricate sign look exactly like a scene from the movie. As a Ghibli fan, unexpectedly coming across a real-life fairy-tale setting filled me with emotion. Even without staying there, simply standing quietly and admiring the stunning beauty of this historic building was enough to leave a lasting impression. It was the most precious sight of this trip.

Notoya, the most iconic inn in Ginzan Onsen, looks pretty ordinary during the day—just like an old hotel.

I stayed here in February 2022, right in the middle of the snowy season. The whole ryokan was super quiet, with a mysterious atmosphere that made it feel like time had stopped. The rooms and the lounges on each floor had a lovely retro vibe, but the real highlight was the food—both breakfast and dinner were gorgeous, delicious, and beautifully presented. The onsen made my skin softer and smoother than any other hot spring I've visited! There aren't many rooms, so they fill up fast. I definitely recommend booking early.
