This time I visited the permanent exhibition, where I learned about Okinawa's geography, history, and culture all at once. The exhibition is very extensive, and the museum has a large collection, making it a great place to slow down and take everything in. Besides the exhibits, I also really liked the building itself. The gray concrete exterior brings to mind the limestone along Okinawa's coast and the outer walls of traditional homes, while also conveying a sense of solemn history. The museum uses a distinctive perforated design to let in natural light, so even though it's a concrete space, the rest areas are still bright and comfortable. The entire building seems to incorporate Okinawa's nature, culture, and memories of peace. It's solemn yet beautiful and well worth a visit.

The Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum in Naha's Shintoshin area is a cultural complex combining a museum and an art museum. The building's exterior was inspired by traditional Ryukyuan gusuku castle ruins, and its white walls and distinctive perforated panels give it a uniquely Okinawan architectural style.

The museum exhibits cover everything from Okinawa's geological evolution and natural ecosystems to the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The content is quite extensive, offering a deeper understanding of how the islands of Okinawa were formed and the relationship between the natural environment and cultural history.

The art museum mainly features works by local Okinawan artists and contemporary art, creating a completely different atmosphere from the museum. The interior is spacious and easy to navigate, and you can spend quite a while exploring at a leisurely pace. It's well worth adding to your itinerary if you're interested in Okinawan history and culture.

Located in Naha's Shintoshin area near Omoromachi monorail station, it's a good place to visit on a rainy day or when you want to learn more about Okinawan culture.

This was my first time visiting the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum. I thought it might be a little boring, but I unexpectedly got really absorbed in exploring it. The museum and art museum are in the same building, so whether you want to learn about Okinawan history or see an art exhibition, you can do both in one visit. The museum presents Okinawa's story from the Ryukyu Kingdom to the present in a very engaging way, and there are also traditional homes from the past that you can visit. It's fun to take your time looking around.

The art museum's exhibitions are also very well curated. In addition to local Okinawan art, there are works from Japan and other parts of Asia to enjoy. The whole environment is very comfortable and doesn't feel overwhelming.

If it happens to be raining or you don't want to keep visiting outdoor attractions, I think this is a great place to come. Enjoy the air conditioning, see the exhibitions, take some photos, and the time flies by. It's a place that's more worth spending time at than I expected.

The architecture of the Okinawa Prefectural Museum is really unique. There's so much to see and it's very diverse. If you have enough time, you can really take your time exploring. 😄
