Lake Akan

Lake Akan is Hokkaido's fifth largest freshwater lake and is known as a habitat for marimo moss balls. Marimo moss balls can be found in freshwater lakes all over the world, but the ones in Lake Akan have international significance due to their beautiful spherical shape with a diameter of more than 15 cm.

At Lake Akan, you can go canoeing or walk along the mud volcano trail to see volcanic scenery. There's also an Ainu village where you can check out traditional crafts and try authentic local food. The street is pretty short—just a 20-minute walk—but you'll find unique cafes and amazing handmade crafts. You can really enjoy the beautiful views and get a taste of Ainu culture here.

Shoshazan Engyoji Temple

A temple of the Tendai sect is located on the 371-meter-high Mount Shosha in the northern part of Himeji City. The temple is said to have been founded in 966 by priest Shoku-Shonin.

Take the cable car up the mountain and walk along the nature trails—they're pretty easy, with some ups and downs. The temple itself is really unique. If you're in Himeji, it's definitely worth a visit.

Taraibune Tub-Boat Ride in Ogi town

Tarai bune (Tub boats) are a representative scenery of Sado Island. Tub boats were invented in the Meiji era (1868-1912) to catch turban shells, abalone, and wakame seaweed on the rocky Ogi Coast. They are said to be more maneuverable than small boats.

White Wall Townscape of Yanai

Yanai City in southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture developed as one of the main marchant port cities on the Seto Inland Sea during the Edo period. The “Shirakebe no Machinami (White wall townscape),” where the buildings in Edo storehouse style still stand, is located in Furuichi-Kanaya district in Yanai City.

The white-walled old street still has an Edo-era vibe. There aren't many tourists, so you can really enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Tower of the Sun (Expo '70 Commemorative Park)

This symbolic art installation for the Theme Pavilion in Japan’s first Expo '70 (Osaka Expo) was designed by the artist Taro Okamoto. It is approximately 70m tall. Currently, the tower is a symbol of Osaka’s Expo '70 Commemorative Park.

This is a symbol of the Osaka Expo and represents the glory of Japan in the 1970s. You need to make an online reservation before visiting inside.

Asagaya

Asagaya is located about 8 minutes by train on JR Chuo line from Shinjuku station. This area is stretched between the south and north centering on the station, the tree lines of Japanese Zelkova on Nakasugi street are beautiful with their fresh greenery and Autumn leaves, Zenpukuji River Green Area is a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in Spring.

I once visited a friend here. There are lots of secondhand bookstores and antique shops around, giving the area a strong artsy vibe.
