Kokura Castle is a must-see when visiting Kitakyushu. It’s within walking distance of JR Kokura Station, making it very convenient to get to. The white castle tower, imposing stone walls, and moat offer a different view from every angle and create a strong sense of a traditional Japanese castle.

Kokura Castle is also a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot in Fukuoka Prefecture. During cherry blossom season, the castle and pale pink blossoms complement each other, making the scenery even more charming. Unfortunately, this visit wasn’t during cherry blossom season, so it was missing that romantic touch of pink. Still, Kokura Castle looked impressive under the clear skies and was well worth a stroll and some photos.

When visiting Mojiko, don’t miss this beautiful Western-style building full of historic charm! The Former Moji Mitsui Club blends retro and modern architectural styles, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into the elegance of a bygone era. Every corner has a charming nostalgic atmosphere, and whether you’re admiring the architecture or taking photos, it’s well worth a visit.

There’s also a restaurant inside where you can sit down and enjoy Mojiko’s famous baked curry, as well as local fugu dishes. Although the food isn’t exactly cheap, dining in a historic Western-style building and enjoying both the food and the unique charm of the retro setting is still highly recommended! If you’re taking a walk around Mojiko, consider stopping by to experience a different kind of nostalgia!

When you come to Mojiko Port, be sure to check out this distinctive drawbridge. From the bridge, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Kanmon Strait. When the bridge slowly rises and boats pass underneath, the sight is truly spectacular!

If you want to see the “bridge opening show,” remember to check the opening times in advance〜 Plan your time well so you can see the entire bridge-raising process.

When visiting Kagoshima, don’t miss this scenic park where you can take in the city and natural beauty all at once! From the Shiroyama Park observation deck, you can see downtown Kagoshima, Kinko Bay, and majestic Sakurajima in the distance. On a clear day, the view is especially expansive, and the whole scene really looks like a postcard.

It’s easily accessible by sightseeing bus, making it very convenient to get to. There are also some shops along the way where you can buy souvenirs and browse local Kagoshima products. Sakurajima × Kinko Bay × downtown Kagoshima—you can enjoy Kagoshima’s most iconic scenery all at once. It’s well worth adding to your itinerary when visiting Kagoshima!

After finding the sign for the trail next to Terukuni Shrine, walk slowly along the mountain path, and you'll reach the observation deck in about 20 minutes. Although it requires a short walk, the route is surrounded by greenery and is very pleasant.

The moment I reached the observation deck, the view was truly stunning. Kagoshima City, the deep blue waters of Kinko Bay, and majestic Sakurajima all came into view at once.

Especially on a clear day, Sakurajima stands clearly across the bay, and the whole scene looks as beautiful as a Japanese travel postcard. Standing here in the breeze and slowly taking in the scenery made me feel that coming to Kagoshima was truly the right choice.

When visiting Kagoshima, besides seeing the impressive Sakurajima, I also highly recommend making time for the Io World Kagoshima City Aquarium!

One of the aquarium's biggest features is the distant view of Sakurajima. Inside, there is a large tank themed around “the sea of Kagoshima,” and stepping into the area feels like entering an underwater world.

Although the aquarium isn't especially large, it has everything you would expect. You can also see some marine creatures that aren't commonly seen in Taiwan, making it quite interesting to explore.

The popular dolphin performance is also a must-see. Watching the dolphins jump and roll creates a lively atmosphere, and children will definitely have a great time!

One thing I personally liked about this place was that it didn't feel too crowded overall. The pace was very comfortable, and there was no need to rush. You can take your time looking around and taking photos, and about 2 hours is enough to see everything thoroughly.

If your itinerary brings you to central Kagoshima and you're looking for a relaxing, family-friendly place, the Io World Kagoshima City Aquarium is well worth adding to your plans.

Standing at Karasujima Observatory, you have a spectacular view of Sakurajima right in front of you. It's hard to imagine that this place was once an island more than a century ago. Changes in the terrain have since connected it to the mainland, leaving behind this landscape characterized by volcanic features.

On a clear day, the distant view of Sakurajima is especially impressive. The majestic, lush green mountain, together with the black volcanic rocks in the foreground, creates scenery with a charm that is truly unique to Kagoshima.

There is also a group of friendly and adorable stray cats here. When I saw them, I couldn't help stopping to say hello, adding a comforting touch to the already impressive volcanic scenery.

This is one of the largest flower parks in Japan. The grounds are very spacious, and the park makes use of Kagoshima’s warm subtropical climate to grow rare plants from around the world.

I visited in mid-April, right when the spring flowers were in full bloom. Hydrangeas, tulips, and all kinds of flowers and plants were blooming everywhere. As I slowly walked through the park, I was surrounded by lush greenery and the fragrance of flowers. The park is really large, yet surprisingly there were hardly any visitors, making it feel almost like I had the whole place to myself. The staff were also very friendly, making the entire visit feel even more pleasant and relaxing.

The most interesting part was the butterfly house. As soon as I walked in, I could see butterflies fluttering all around me. The interior, filled with tropical plants, was vibrant and very soothing! Admission is only about JPY 630.
For a low admission fee, you can leisurely explore a huge garden and enjoy flowers and plants from different seasons.

When visiting Kagoshima, don’t miss this historic shrine. Kagoshima Jingu Shrine is designated a National Historic Site and is also one of the largest shrines in southern Kyushu.

The vermilion shrine buildings are surrounded by lush greenery and look especially solemn and striking in the sunlight. Once inside the grounds, you can feel the peaceful and sacred atmosphere. It’s really relaxing to stroll around slowly and admire the architecture and natural scenery.

The blue summer sky and verdant trees make the entire shrine look even more magnificent. It’s a place well worth visiting to experience Japanese history and traditional culture.

When visiting Shuri in Okinawa, don’t miss the historic Shuri Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Path. Built in the 16th century, it was once an important road leading to Shuri Castle. Walking slowly along the old Ryukyu limestone-paved path, with traditional red-tiled roofs and stone walls on both sides, you can also take in views of the hillside and streets, as if you’re stepping back into the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Although the stone path is a bit steep and takes some energy to walk, the scenery along the way is truly full of character. The sunlight falling on the old houses and stone walls creates a distinctly Okinawan sense of history and a laid-back atmosphere.
