Nishitetsu Grand Hotel

Nishitetsu Grand Hotel has been representing Fukuoka City since its foundation in 1969. It is located on the corner of Meiji dori and Tenjin Nishi dori, very close to the Tenjin subway station. A door man welcomes guests at the entrance and the hotel has a sophisticated and dignified atmosphere.

The location is incredibly convenient! After dropping off our luggage, we could head straight out to shop in the Tenjin area. Almost everything we wanted was within walking distance, including clothes, glasses, and cosmetics.

The room wasn’t very large since the hotel is downtown, but it was comfortable enough for a good night’s rest. The breakfast buffet had a fantastic selection, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offered beautiful views of the lush garden, making breakfast even more relaxing and enjoyable.

Hita City, neighboring Fukuoka and Kumamoto, was a prosperous “Tenryo (directly ruled by the Shogunate)” merchant town in Edo Period. The city is still dotted by classic buildings and earthen walls, which earned the nickname “Little Kyoto in Kyushu.” Roughly a 15-minute walk from Hita train station will take you to Mameda Town, where houses of merchants still remain who were providing goods to the Shogunate during the Tenryo Era.

The streets and buildings are gorgeous! The charming old-fashioned atmosphere also has a cute touch ❤️ Walking around here is so peaceful and relaxing. Whether you’re by a wall, next to a vintage window frame, or just standing along the street, it’s easy to take beautiful, atmospheric photos. It’s truly a lovely place.

There are also some Attack on Titan collaborations here. I love the anime, so spotting Captain Levi around town and inside the shops was such a fun surprise〜

Mizuki Spring Tour and Strolling the Shrine Town

Aso Shrine has a history of about 2,300 years and is known for Aso’s agricultural rituals, designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. In the shrine town, the Aso Ichinomiya Monzenmachi Shopping Street offers excellent food, including takeout items, sweets, and lunches featuring Akaushi beef, a local Aso specialty, and is bustling every day with worshippers and visitors. As you stroll through the shrine town, you will come across spring water spots called mizuki.

Although we only had limited time on this visit and just took a quick look around, we still saw two or three mizuki spring water spots.
The streets were really pleasant and perfect for a leisurely stroll, coffee, or a snack.
If you have time after visiting Aso Shrine, setting aside some time for the full mizuki spring tour would make for a great travel plan!

Aso Shrine (Kumamoto)

The master god who has created Aso, Takei Watatsu no Mikoto, and 12 of his family gods are enshrined here. As the head of Higo Province, this is ranked top over nearly 500 branch Aso Shrines nationwide. Its history goes back more than 2000 years. Its faith is fused with volcano worship that believes Mt. Aso to be a god.

The tall tower gate is very solemn and impressive. There’s also a unique horizontal approach, and you can see the Aso volcano group in the distance.
I heard this is a famous power spot, and walking around here really did feel peaceful and refreshing.
The sacred spring at the entrance was incredibly cold. I was a little disappointed I didn’t have a water bottle with me... I couldn’t take any of the spring water to drink.

Amaterasu Railway

Takachiho Railway, the favorite of tourists, was unfortunately closed in 2005. Now, using those railways, a grand diesel engine super cart is run for tourists. It goes through two tunnels from Takachiho Station to Takachiho Bridge and comes back on its 5.1km round trip at 20km/h for roughly 30minutes.

When the weather is nice, every photo turns out great. The scenery along the way is lovely, and when you pass through the tunnel, there’s even a little LED light show on the ceiling.
The classic stop in the middle of the high railway bridge goes without saying. Looking down over the gorge is spectacular, and the staff even blow bubbles so everyone can take photos. It feels totally dreamy!
Since it’s designed to let passengers enjoy the views better, it’s completely open-air with no roof. The direct sun can be a bit hot, so be sure to bring sun protection. But honestly, if you’re lucky enough to see this amazing scenery in good weather, a little sun along the way is totally worth it.

Takachiho Gorge, designated as a National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, is a stunning landscape formed by the erosion of pyroclastic flows from Mount Aso's eruption. The result is a unique gorge with striking columnar cliffs, known as columnar jointing.

Such a beautiful, dreamlike waterfall. The terrain and scenery, together with the lush greenery in summer, are gorgeous and so soothing.
Watching the little boats glide slowly below also feels peaceful. I didn’t go down for a boat ride myself, but just taking in the view was really relaxing.

Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge is a narrow v-shaped chasm made over thousands of years by the Gokase River’s erosion of Mt. Aso’s volcanic rock. This spectacular place is surrounded by cliffs that average 80 meters in height (reaching up to 100 meters) and extend along for 7 kilometers. Takachiho Gorge has been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

Visited in early summer, and from the entrance all the way to the gorge, everything was lush and green. Super soothing.
The walking path was easy too, so it was a really comfortable way to get close to nature.
The columnar volcanic rock formations had a unique kind of beauty, and we were lucky to get great weather.
It was a little hot, but seeing the scenery in the sunlight with my own eyes was even more beautiful than in the photos.

Sakitsu Church

Sakitsu is a peaceful fishing village now, but this “hidden Christians’ village” survived the era of persecutions. Sakitsu Church is at the center of the village with a Gothic-style tower standing tall.

A gorgeous Gothic-style church stands among the simple homes of this rustic fishing village.
The architectural details are delicate and beautiful, and it bears witness to the area's history of faith.
It was built with a mix of reinforced concrete and wood because of limited funds at the time, which actually became one of its unique highlights.

Amakusa’s Sakitsu Village (Component of a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site)

Amakusa’s Sakitsu Village is located on Shimoshima Island in the Amakusa Islands. This village reflects the continued faith of Hidden Christians during Japan’s ban on Christianity and is registered as one of the components of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region.” Sakitsu is a fishing village that developed after the Sengoku period and served as a base for missionary work when Christianity first arrived in Japan.

Taking a slow walk along the road into this quiet little fishing village felt simple, grounded, and really soothing.
The water was so clear, reflecting the fishing boats and small hills. Beside the homes were fruit trees heavy with fruit and beautifully cared-for plants.
There weren’t crowds of noisy tourists, just traces of residents living their everyday lives with care.
Together with its moving history of faith, this is a meaningful hidden gem that I really loved.
I came here on a tour, so I didn’t have to worry about transportation at all. Awesome!

Amakusa Kaisen Kura

Located at the northern tip of Shimoshima, the largest island in the Amakusa archipelago, this popular complex offers dolphin watching in some of Kumamoto’s clearest waters along with dining options that let you fully enjoy local seafood.

I had the grilled live abalone set at Amakusa Kaisen Kura, and it was incredibly fresh and delicious. It was simply cooked over charcoal, and with just a little sauce, it tasted amazing.
The grilled fish really surprised me with how good it was. Even after going back to Taiwan, I still kind of miss that fish QQ
The shop also sells lots of items and has plushie prize draws, so you can try your luck and take home a cute souvenir doll.
