These Ogura Sanso rice crackers are seriously delicious. They have just the right amount of crunch without being too hard, and the rice flavor is very rich. There’s a great variety of flavors. Both the sweet and savory soy sauce flavor and the savory seaweed flavor are excellent. The seasoning is just right overall and not overly salty at all. When I keep them for myself to snack on while watching a show, I can’t help eating one after another.

Tenmonkan area, Kagoshima

Tenmonkan is Kagoshima's largest downtown area and stretches around the arcade street of Temmonkan Hondori. Even on rainy days or when there is ash fall from Sakurajima volcano, the arcade protects the area, making it a pleasant place to shop and stroll.

The Tenmonkan shopping arcade is great for browsing, and the entire street is covered. It's packed with restaurants and drugstores. When you're here, you definitely have to try the famous black pork tonkatsu—the meat is tender, juicy, and so satisfying. After your meal, don't forget to try the traditional Shirokuma shaved ice. The fluffy shaved ice topped with plenty of fruit and condensed milk is pure bliss.

Kirishima Jingu Shrine

Kirishima-Jingu is a shrine that represents southern Kyushu. Founded in the 6th century, it boasts a deep and ancient history. Kirishima-Jingu was transferred to its present location over 500 years ago, after repeatedly burning down and being rebuilt due to Mt. Kirishima’s eruptions. This shrine worships Ninigi-no-Mikoto of Japan’s founding myth.

Kirishima Jingu Shrine is an absolute must when visiting Kagoshima. After passing through the giant torii gate, walking along the forest path with its incredibly fresh air is instantly soothing. The bright red main shrine is tucked away in nature, looking both majestic and beautiful. Come here to worship, take a walk, and soak up the negative ions.

Takachiho Farm

A tourist farm at the foot of the Kirishima mountain range. Overlooking majestic Mount Takachiho, its expansive 42-hectare grounds offer animal encounters, dairy farming activities, and farm-fresh food. Opened in 1991 as an interactive tourist farm, it has become one of southern Kyushu's most popular tourist attractions.

Not only can you feed calves up close and interact with the sheep, but the views are also incredible. The highlight is that their dairy products are seriously delicious. The fresh milk is rich and smooth, and the soft-serve ice cream is a must! Eating dessert while enjoying the scenery is so relaxing. It's a great place that both adults and kids will love.

Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge

Aya Town was registered as a UNESCO Ecopark in 2012 for the large-scale preservation of laurel forest, many Japan’s native species, and for the nature-friendly regional development. Teruha Suspension Bridge, also included in the Kyushu Chuo Sanchi Quasi-National Park, is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world, where you can experience the nature of Aya River Gorge.

Once you step onto the Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge, the view is truly breathtaking, with the entire forest spreading out beneath your feet. The suspension bridge sways slightly as you walk, which is a little thrilling, but the air is unbelievably fresh. Standing in the middle of the bridge and gazing out over the valley instantly puts you at ease. It's definitely a place to relax your body and mind.

Takachiho Shrine

Takachiho Shrine is said to have been founded about 1,900 years ago during the reign of Emperor Suinin. The deities enshrined here are "Takachiho Sumegami" and "Jissha Daimyojin." During the Tenkei period (938-947), it garnered widespread faith as the chief shrine among the "Eighty-eight Shrines of Takachiho." It is believed to bring benefits in matchmaking, protection from evils, traffic safety, and agriculture.

Takachiho Shrine has such an incredible atmosphere. Surrounded by giant thousand-year-old cedar trees, the moment you walk in, you feel completely at peace. It's especially famous for prayers for a good match, and you can also buy exquisitely crafted wooden carvings of the 12 zodiac animals. Be sure to come at night to watch the special “Takachiho Kagura” performance and experience the rich appeal of Japanese mythology.

Aoshima Shrine

Aoshima is a small island of 1.5km in circumference, which is connected with a 150m-long bridge to the main island. The whole island is Aoshima Shrine’s ground. As a holy island, no one was allowed to visit here. The whole premises are covered with areca trees and other sub-tropical plants in a very Miyazaki-like tropical scenery.

Aoshima Shrine is a must-visit when you come to Miyazaki. What’s special is that you have to cross a bridge to reach the shrine. You need to be very careful at high tide, or the waves crashing onto the shore will get you wet. It’s really exciting. The shrine is hidden in a jungle of tropical and subtropical plants, giving it a very unique atmosphere. It’s definitely worth spending half a day walking around.

Sun Messe Nichinan

Located on a small hill overlooking the Nichinan Coast, this popular tourist attraction features the impressive Ahu Akivi. It is the first ever complete replica of the Moai statues, authorized by the Elders of Easter Island. With the blue sea as a backdrop, the seven pairs of Moai statues evoke a sense of historical romance and mystery.

The Moai statues here are the only replicas in the world authorized by Easter Island. They’re truly spectacular, and photos with the Pacific Ocean in the background look great. The park has a large lawn and swings overlooking the ocean, giving it a real vacation feel. However, the slopes are fairly steep and there isn’t much shade, so if you visit in summer, remember to stay hydrated and use sun protection.

Udo Shrine

This unique shrine sits inside a cave found along the cliffs facing the sea. The shrine is known for safe childbirth, children, marriage as well as property for fishermen and those headed out to sea. Udo Shrine and its surrounding area are designated as a National Scenic Beauty.

Udo Shrine is truly unique. It’s built inside a rocky cave by the sea. When you come here, you have to try throwing undama lucky stones at the hollow on the back of the turtle-shaped rock by the ocean. Men use their left hand and women use their right. If you get one in, they say your wish will come true. Walking along the path and watching the waves crash against the cliffs is so soothing. Although there are some stairs to climb, it’s definitely worth it and a must-visit.

Obi Castle Town

In Tensho 16 (1588), Toyotomi Hideyoshi granted the castle to Ito Sukebei for his efforts to alleviate Kyushu. It was maintained and flourished as a castle town for the Obi clan, Ito family, with a population of 51,000 koku for 280 years until the abolition of the domain in 1588. The ruins of Obi Castle, samurai residences, old storehouses, and other structures remain. The area was the first in Kyushu to be designated as a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

It has the feel of a little Kyoto in Kyushu. The historic samurai residences and stone-walled paths are beautiful in photos, and there are even koi swimming in the canals. The best part was buying the “Eat as You Walk Pass,” which can be exchanged for local food and Obi souvenirs. The atmosphere is relaxed, and it’s fun to explore. It’s a great place to slow down and stroll around.
