Maizuru City is located in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture.
The western part of the city, Nishi-Maizuru, developed as the castle town of Tanabe Castle, which was built by the Hosokawa clan during the Warring States period and is now a place for relaxation for citizens as Maizuru Park.
Rent a bicycle to tour the historic streets and enjoy the retro and nostalgic scenery, fresh seafood, and other attractions of Maizuru!

How to get to Maizuru City?

JR Nishi-Maizuru Station, the starting point for sightseeing in Maizuru, is approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes from Kyoto Station using the "Maizuru Limited Express" on the San’in Main Line.
It is also easily accessible from Osaka Station that is approx. 2 hours via Kyoto Station, making it easy to add on to your sightseeing tour of Kyoto and Osaka.
After staying at Kinosaki Onsen, we recommend taking a scenic driving route along the coastline of Kyotango, which is dotted with geological heritage sites in the San'in Kaigan Geopark recognized by UNESCO, to enter Maizuru.
It is also convenient to use Nishi Maizuru as a base for touring the surrounding areas, such as the Ine district, where a group of funaya (boat houses) along the coast has been designated as a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and Amanohashidate, one of the "Three Great Views of Japan.

Explore the historical and natural town of Maizuru by bicycle, including temples, castle ruins, and cherry blossoms

Before heading to the Maizuru Port Tore Tore Center, located about 2 km from Nishi-Maizuru Station, take a stroll through the town of Nishi-Maizuru by bicycle.
Take a walk along the foot of Mt. Atago, where there are many temples including Keirinji Temple, one of the oldest Zen temples of the Soto sect in the Tango region, where you can draw a paper fortune and get a goshuin red seal.
The Tanabe Castle Museum, where you can learn about the history of the castle, and Maizuru Park (Tanabe Castle Ruins), with its well-preserved Japanese garden, are also popular.
During the cherry blossom viewing season, we recommend taking a slight detour to Maizuru Park, Isazugawa Athletic Park, and other cherry blossom viewing spots for a more tasteful experience.

11:30am Shopping and lunch time at Maizuru Port Tore Tore Center

Shortly before lunch time, arrive at the Maizuru Port Tore Tore Center, a roadside station with one of the largest seafood markets on the Sea of Japan coast. After selecting souvenirs at the seafood market, enjoy fresh seafood for lunch.

Let's make your own Kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) or set meal, one of a kind in the world!

The seafood market at the Tore Tore Center is filled with fresh seafood from the Maizuru Fish Market, which boasts the largest catch in Kyoto Prefecture, including brand names such as "Maizuru crab" and "Kyo-sawara".
You can buy a wide variety of processed foods such as dried fish and frozen crabs as souvenirs, or you can have your favorite seafood prepared as sashimi or grilled fish and enjoy it at the eat-in corner in the market.
If you purchase a bowl of rice, you can make your own kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl) with your favorite sashimi on top.

There are also a variety of restaurants such as Kaisen Barbecue House (open only on weekends and holidays, from 11:00am to last entry 2:00pm) where you can bring in your purchased seafood to enjoy, as well as sushi restaurants and restaurants where you can enjoy seafood rice bowls, so you can choose according to your preference.
If you like oysters, we recommend taking a short trip to Shimoagu, beyond the Yoshiwara district, and having lunch at "Maizuru Port Oyster Hut Oisuta" (open only on weekends and holidays; open in winter from early December to late March *open by reservation only; open in summer from early June to late August) where you can taste steamed natural oysters landed that morning by free-diving fishermen.

1:30pm Visit the Yoshiwara area, the "Venice of Japan"

In the afternoon, head to the Yoshiwara area, where a canal runs through the center of town.
Enjoying the view of Kyoto Maizuru Port (West Port), it takes about 15 minutes by bicycle.
At Yoshiwara Irie, the scenery is truly photogenic, with houses built right behind the canal and fishing boats all moored up!
Enjoy a nostalgic stroll through the town, looking for scenery rarely seen anywhere else.

The town layout developed in the Edo period still remains in the Yoshiwara district.
A canal runs through the middle of the densely built residential houses, and fishing boats are anchored on both sides of the canal, creating a unique scene.
The appearance of the area, which is reminiscent of Venice, Italy, known as the "City of Water," has been coming up a lot in SNS etc.
In recent years, it has become a popular photo spot visited by many overseas tourists as "Japan's Venice".

2:30pm Experience making kamaboko (fish cake) at "Maizuru Kamaboko Studio"

After enjoying the nostalgic scenery, head across the Isazu River from the Yoshiwara area to the "Maizuru Kamaboko Studio'' for a Kamaboko Making Workshop.
Using fresh fish caught in the nearby coastal waters, visitors can make kamaboko, chikuwa, and hiraten (deep-fried kamaboko).

Enjoy freshly made hot kamaboko, hiraten, and chikuwa

Maizuru kamaboko is made from "raw surimi (fish paste)" made from fresh fish caught in the nearby coastal waters, and is characterized by its chewy texture made by a unique two-stage steaming process.
After wearing the cap and apron provided, listen to the lecture and start the experience!
Using a knife, press the surimi onto a kamaboko board, shape it into a mountain, and steam it to make a beautiful kamaboko.
You can try your hand at making a variety of foods using the same raw fish paste, such as chikuwa by winding around a bamboo stick and grilling it, or forming it into a heart or star shape and deep frying it to make hiraten.
While listening to a talk about the history of kamaboko and the particulars of the manufacturing process, you can taste the finished kamaboko, chikuwa, and hiraten on the spot.
Freshly prepared hot stuff that you made yourself tastes exceptional!
Of course, you can also take them home as souvenirs.

Ride your bicycle while enjoying retro shopping streets and local sweets

The Hiranoya shopping street with its triumphal arch and the Manai shopping street with its arcade both have an attractive retro atmosphere.
The nostalgic atmosphere of these streets will give you a fresh feeling when you ride a bicycle through them.
Also worth checking out are two photogenic public bathhouses that are registered as national tangible cultural properties and are still in operation today.
If you have time to spare, you may want to stop by and take a bath to refresh yourself.
The machiya-style "Hinodeyu" is located in the Yoshiwara district, and the Western-style "Wakanoyu" is in the Hiranoya shopping district.
At a café near Wakanoyu, you can enjoy soft service ice cream made from soy milk, pudding made from Maizuru eggs and Kyotango milk, and other local sweets that will add color to your slightly late snack time.

Summary

How did you enjoy this 1-day trip starting from Nishi-Maizuru Station?
In addition to the model courses introduced in this article, Maizuru has many other attractive sightseeing spots!
We recommend that you stay overnight and spend the next day touring the Higashi-Maizuru area, where the port and red-brick buildings associated with the Navy remain, to enjoy Maizuru to the fullest.
In Nishi Maizuru, there is also a guesthouse for foreigners called "Saikaan" with a comfortable Japanese atmosphere.
A long-established movie theater that opened in 1938 and a cinema café that opened in 2019 are also popular spots to spend a relaxing evening watching a movie on your trip!
