Suica is one of Japan’s best-known transportation IC cards.
Used not only for trains and buses but also for shopping and dining, it has become a must-have across the country.
This article covers the basics of Suica, its different types, and how to get and charge one.

10 Transportation IC Cards Commonly Used in Japan

Before taking a closer look at Suica, let’s first briefly go over the transportation IC cards commonly used in Japan and the areas where they can be used.
A transportation IC card is basically a form of e-money that can be used on public transportation such as trains and buses.
Not only can you use public transportation without buying a paper ticket, but you can also use it in many situations, such as at convenience stores and vending machines.
Various railway companies issue their own transportation IC cards, and there are 10 main types in use. Their service areas are summarized in the table below.

Suica
JR East, Sapporo Municipal Transportation Bureau, etc.
PASMO
Tokyo Metro, Keikyu, etc.
Kitaca
JR Hokkaido
TOICA
JR Central, etc.
ICOCA
JR West
PiTaPa
Hankyu, Hanshin, subways, Keihan, Kintetsu, Nankai, etc.
manaca
Meitetsu, Nagoya Municipal Subway, etc.
SUGOCA
JR Kyushu, etc.
はやかけん
Fukuoka City Subway
nimoca
Nishitetsu, etc.

Although service areas are divided in detail by railway company, the 10 transportation IC cards introduced above are mutually compatible within their respective areas.
That means if you have any one of these transportation IC cards, you can use it across Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Okinawa, except in some areas and on some forms of public transportation.
Basically, there is no need to get multiple transportation IC cards, and having just one is enough.
From here, let’s take a closer look at Suica, the most widely used of the 10 types.

Make Your Trip to Japan Even Easier with the Suica Transportation IC Card

Suica is a transportation IC card issued by JR East.
If you load money onto the card in advance, you can simply tap it on the reader when boarding or getting off trains and buses, and the fare will be deducted automatically so you can pass through.
It saves you the trouble of buying tickets and calculating fares, and even if you ride beyond your intended stop, the fare is automatically calculated at the ticket gate, making travel more efficient.
It is also useful in a wide range of situations, and with Suica, you can cover small trips and purchases even if you do not have cash on hand.
It is helpful not only in daily life but also when traveling.
Suica is broadly divided into three types: My Suica (registered), Suica Card (unregistered), and Mobile Suica.

Differences Between My Suica and the Suica Card

My Suica and the Suica Card look almost the same, and the only visible difference is whether the card has the holder’s name printed on it.
The differences in use and functions are summarized in the table below.

- My Suica Suica Card
At issuance The user’s name, date of birth, and other details are registered (and printed on the Suica) No personal data is registered at all

Mobile Suica: Pay with Just Your Smartphone

Mobile Suica is an app and service that adds Suica functionality to a mobile device such as a smartphone or Apple Watch.
Its basic functions are the same as a regular Suica, but one major feature is that there is no need to carry a physical card, which also means less risk of losing it, and everything can be completed on your device alone.
Another benefit is that no deposit is required at purchase, and you can charge it in the app without lining up at a ticket machine.
It is also easy to transfer from a physical Suica card you already own.
On the other hand, use is limited to one device.
If your device runs out of battery, you will not be able to use it, so you need to keep an eye on the battery level.
If you have a smartphone that supports reserve battery power, you can still use it for a certain period even after the device powers down.
Also, Mobile Suica uses Japan’s unique FeliCa standard, so devices purchased outside Japan cannot be used, except for iPhones.

*1 Compatible models: iPhone 8 or later, and Apple Watch Series 3 or later only
*2 You need to register a payment method such as a credit card in Apple Wallet

Where Suica Can Be Used and Important Notes

As mentioned above, Suica can be used throughout Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Okinawa, except in some areas and on some forms of public transportation.
However, the system is divided into the areas below, and you cannot use it across different areas, so please be careful. (If you will cross between areas, buy a paper ticket in advance.)

  • Greater Tokyo Area
  • Hokkaido Area
  • Aomori Area
  • Morioka Area
  • Akita Area
  • Sendai Area
  • Niigata Area
  • Tokai Area
  • West Japan Area
  • Kyushu Area
  • Okinawa Area

If you accidentally travel across areas, do not tap out at the station where you get off. Instead, speak to station staff at the ticket gate and explain the situation.
The staff will cancel the Suica transaction, and you will need to pay the fare from your boarding station to your destination station in cash.

Suica’s Image Character Will Retire at the End of Fiscal 2026

Since Suica was launched in fiscal 2001, the Suica Penguin has been loved as its image character.
It appears not only on Suica cards and Mobile Suica, but has also inspired cafés, shops, and a wide variety of merchandise themed around the Suica Penguin.
However, it has been announced that this beloved character will retire at the end of fiscal 2026, around 25 years after the service began, and hand over the role to a successor image character.
As of February 2026, the successor image character has not yet been decided.

The maximum charge amount is 20,000 yen, but in fall 2026, a QR code payment service is scheduled to be added, and the charge limit for QR code payments is expected to be 300,000 yen.
The existing touch payment will continue to be available, and the app will allow users to switch between touch payments and QR code payments.
In addition, a money transfer function for family and friends is also planned.
Also, by linking it with View Card, a credit card from the JR East Group, it is expected that users will be able to shop up to their credit limit without charging in advance.
