Last update :

Oyama is a hill often covered in clouds. Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as a holy mountain to pray for rain. That's why a Shinto shrine was built here.
Divided into a lower shrine and the main shrine on the peak, a cable car brings worshippers to the lower shrine.

Making a visit to Oyama Afuri Shrine, called "Oyama Mairi" in Japanese, has been popular since the Edo Period, when 200,000 people would come every year to worship, as depicted in Ukiyoe works of art. Today, "Oyama Mairi" is recognized as a certified Japanese Heritage for its historical and cultural value.

From a height of 696 meters, the sublime view from the lower shrine is so magnificent that it has been highly evaluated in popular travel guidebooks.
Located at an elevation of 1,252 meters, the main shrine requires a 90-minute climb from the lower shrine, so it's necessary to bring proper climbing gear.
On the way up the cable car route, there is also Oyama Temple, a popular place to see beautiful autumn leaves.
