Komyo-ji Temple is a famous temple of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, and the temple is said to have been founded in 1243. It was founded by Ryochu Nen’a after Hojo Tsunetoki converted to Buddhism. Its formal name is Jōdo-shū Daihonzan Tenshōzan Renge-in Kōmyō-ji.
Built in 1698, the main hall is the largest remaining wooden structure in Kamakura, and it has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
During spring cherry blossoms bloom, as do lotus during summer in the temple pond, providing a soothing sight to visitors.
Furthermore, the view from Mt. Tensho behind Komyo-ji Temple is absolutely stunning, and the mountain has ranked as one of Kanagawa’s top 50 scenic spots.
If you make a reservation, you can partake in a vegetarian meal and learn in a shakyo (sutra-copying) experience.
