Ikuo Hirayama Museum of Art
An Art Museum in the Hometown of Painter Ikuo Hirayama. Rediscover the landscapes behind the Art of Hirayama.
This art museum commemorates the works of famed Japanese painter, Ikuo Hirayama, born in Setodacho, Ikuchi Island in 1930. In addition to his paintings, the exhibits include his early boyhood sketches, personal stories (including the Hiroshima bombing), photos of his school years and a statue of the artist himself.
The design of this one-story Japanese-style museum mirrors his common art themes of “Buddhism” and “peace”, while also housing a garden designed after the Seto Inland Sea, affixed with a small mound at its center that mimics the view of Hyotanjima from Ikuchi Island.
At “Oasis”, the museum’s tea lounge, you’ll find a replica of a painting depicting a camel and caravan walking the desert (Artwork: Shichu no Michi Tenkuu (lit. Sky over the Silk Road)), set in a complementary wooden-made space. The menu features seasonal citrus items from the Setouchi area you won’t want to miss.
※Ikuo Hirayama painted “Fifty-three Stages on the Shimanami Highway”, a collection of 60 different water color pieces in commemoration of the opening of the Shimanami Highway. The sketches depict different points of interest between Onomichi (Hiroshima) and Imbarari (Ehime), which you can see baked into ceramic panel sculptures at each spot.
