Opened in 1982 on a hill behind JR Atami Station and renewed in 2017, this modern art museum spans three floors above ground and one underground, with a total floor area of 17,000m². It houses about 3,500 pieces, primarily focusing on Oriental art, including paintings, calligraphy, and crafts.

Among its collection are three national treasures: Ogata Korin's "Red and White Plum Blossoms" folding screen, Nonomura Ninsei's "Tea-leaf Jar with a design of wisteria," and the The Calligraphy Album ‘Tekagami Kanboku-jo’. It also holds 67 Important Cultural Properties and 46 Important Art Objects. The museum is also home to the "Golden Tea Room," faithfully recreated after Toyotomi Hideyoshi's teahouse, and a full-scale Noh theater with a cypress-bark roof.

The grounds, spanning about 70,000 square meters, include the "Zuiunkyo" garden, showcasing the beautiful scenery of cherry blossoms in spring, azaleas, fresh greenery in early summer, and autumn leaves. The entrance leads to the Mua Square through a height difference of 48.5m and a distance of 203.5m, connected by seven escalators. A highlight is the huge kaleidoscope projected in a circular hall about 20m in diameter and 10m high. The main lobby and Mua Square offer stunning views, with a 180-degree panorama spanning from Izu Oshima and Hatsushima islands to the Boso and Izu Peninsulas.
