It is located right in front of Kyoto Station. It was designed in the shape of a lighthouse to illuminate Kyoto, and is the tallest building in Kyoto at 131 meters. It has been visited by over 32 million people since it opened in 1964.
You can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto from the observation deck, 100 meters above the ground. On a clear day, you can even see Osaka through the free telescope there.
After enjoying the scenery, strolling inside the building underneath the tower would be enjoyable. The commercial facility “KYOTO TOWER SANDO”, located on the first basement floor to the second floor, is brimming with the charm of Kyoto. The first basement floor is a food hall with a collection of famous and popular Kyoto gourmet restaurants and cafes. The first floor is filled with Kyoto-style items such as Japanese and Western sweets, Japanese pickles, and cosmetics, making it an ideal place for souvenir shopping. On the second floor, you can try to involve yourself in traditional Kyoto culture by making Japanese confectionery, learning how to make sushi, painting on Kiyomizu wares, and renting a kimono. The fifth through ninth floors are used for a hotel, so this should be the most convenient location to stay.
At night, Kyoto tower is lit up in red, blue, pink, and green depending on the season and events, so be sure to check to see if you can see the tower’s beautiful illumination.
