Japan’s largest Islamic mosque. In Turkish, Camii means a large mosque where worship takes place five times a day including Fridays. It came from an Arabic word that means “a place where many people gather.”

Tokyo Camii started construction in 1998 and opened in June of 2000. The chapel walls are decorated with Arabic calligraphy and intricate stained glass that changes the ambiance depending on the weather and time of day. On the dome ceiling, the names of Allah and prophets, the name of the caliph and an excerpt from the Koran are engraved.

The Turkish cultural center is also set up, used as a mosque and for sharing Islamic and Turkish cultures. There is a halal market on the 1st floor that sells Turkish sweets, teas, etc. The 1st basement floor is home to an event hall, the 2nd floor has a cafe and a cultural space, and the 3rd floor is home to miscellaneous rooms with space for events and workshops related to Turkish culture.

Highlights

  • Every Saturday, Sunday and holiday, there is a guided tour at 2:30pm (about an hour) No reservation required (Free).
  • For touring the chapel, women are expected to bring a scarf and dress in a modest long-sleeve shirt, long pants, or skirt. Men should avoid exposing clothes such as shorts and tank tops.
  • In the halal market, Turkish food, crafts and a variety of goods are available.
