39km north west of Sakata City in Japan Sea, there is an only inhabited remote island of Yamagata. Designated as Chokai Quasi-National Park, Tobishima Island has a primeval nature. Daylilies open lovely bright yellow flowers in June. They are native and limited to Tobishima, part of Sakata City and Sado Island. Bird-watching is popular here. Being a stopover for migrating birds, you have better chances to see rare birds.

Tobishima is also known as a major fishing spot in Japan for the variety and size of fish, and anglers in Yamagata and other prefectures flock here. Visit fishing gear rental shops and lodgings which serve freshly-caught fish.

A boat makes a round trip a day at Sakata Port, if you want to have a day trip. There are a few lodgings (Call and check before you go). Enjoy the relaxing pace at.
