Last update :

The three brick buildings, built between the Meiji and Taisho eras, were once used as former military armories, and after the war as the Kanazawa College of Art.
In order to reuse them as a museum, the exterior of the buildings were faithfully restored to their original state. The interior was newly renovated and reopened in harmony with the exhibition facilities. The view of the three 90-meter-long red brick warehouses standing side by side is rare in Japan, and the building has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property in recognition of its architectural value and its reuse as a museum.

The museum holds approximately 170,000 archaeological, historical, and folklore materials from primitive to modern times. The permanent exhibition consists of a "History exhibit" that overviews the history of Ishikawa from the primitive times to the present based on the symbolic themes of each period, and a "Folklore exhibit" that introduces festival culture rooted in the local environment. The exhibition rooms are equipped with a large screen, dioramas, models, and other exhibits, making it possible for everyone to experience history in an enjoyable way.

In addition to holding special exhibitions several times a year, the Hands-on Interaction Hall, which is open to everyone free of charge, has a "100 Years Gallery of the Building" that introduces the history and charm of the building, and a "Hands-on History & Events" where visitors can wear historic garment and touch actual materials to enjoy a wide range of Ishikawa's history.
