Shoyeido Kunjyukan
Experience Japan’s ‘fragrance culture’ at this 300-year-old incense shop in Kyoto.
Kunjyukan, operated by Shoyeido, is a hub for information on incense with over 300 years of history. On the first floor is Koh-labo "Exploring Incense", offering a variety of interactive fragrance experiences.
Three Foh-Box suspended from the ceiling provide a unique experience; immersing the upper body inside the box surrounds one with different types of fragrances. There’s also a Large Log of Sandalwood for tactile and olfactory enjoyment, Fragrance Pole that release the scent of raw incense ingredients upon pressing a pump, and miniature displays of traditional incense-making processes, all conveying the allure of incense.
The Shogin Lobby connected to the entrance hosts various workshops and exhibitions related to incense. The Shouju Gallery, accessible only during exhibitions, showcases various materials related to scents. Next door, Shoyeido Kyoto main store offers a tour of the incense manufacturing process by reservation.
