Horikawa New Culture Building

An integrated facility themed around art and interaction, incorporating a bookstore, cafe, and gallery.

Last update :

This multifaceted facility is run by Ogaki Bookstore, a venerable institution with over 80 years of history in Kyoto. It opened in 2021 on the site of the Horikawa Apartments, which gained attention in the mid-Showa era (around 1945~) as Japan's first residential complex with attached shops. With a vision of "Adding richness to life in Horikawa, extending daily life into a 'platform for culture'", they aim to create a space for interaction with local culture and art.

On the first floor, the "Ogaki Bookstore" embodies the idea of "continuing to be a bookstore that the community needs" by offering approximately 35,000 high-quality books, including general literature and ZINEs. In one corner, the printing workshop "Shokodo" provides support for those looking to create art books or self-published works.

The second floor houses the "NEUTRAL" gallery, which organizes various exhibitions regardless of genre or age. The space is versatile and can also be used for events like live performances.

There is also a cafe with its roasting room within the building. Enjoy freshly roasted coffee in a relaxing space.
